URBAN/CITY

The idea for my urban/city had initially started with the significant place which was to be photographing the tower. from this i then decided to research into Darwen's history. i knew a little about darwen already in that it was a very industrial town with lots of cotton and paper mills, so i decided that i wanted to photograph all of the mills and how they were now but on looking into this i found that a lot of the mills had now been knocked down or converted only one or two were still standing. so i went out on a photoshoot to find things which related to darwens history and what i could use for inspiration towards this project.

1st photoshoot:
these images are all unedited.

India Mills Chimney

a paper roller from crown wallpapers

this plaque was on a house in garden village and states that this is the house in which Gandhi stayed during his visit to the town.

this is one of the entrances to sunnyhurst woods, the gateway was donated by John Charles Potter who was related to Beatrix potter.

this plaque is placed on the house in the picture below and was the home of Samuel Crompton, who invented the spinning mule.

from this photoshoot i decided i needed to research the towns history in more depth. i had been given a book which was by Martin Baggoley and consisted of images of darwen along with some short paragraphs in relation to the images.

a never to be forgotten day was also a short book on the history of darwen and the library.

after looking at this book i then went to to the web and looked up darwen, the pages i viewed consisted of more image and history the most useful one i came across was http://www.cottontown.org/

from carrying out all of my research i had decided that my next stop was the local library as this is where most of the image which i had seen in the book 'Darwen' had come from.
